Whiskey: Powers John Lane 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Irish

Powers John Lane Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey has a sharp aroma of honey and spices that gives way to notes of leather, charred wood, milk chocolate and apricots on the palate. The finish is chewy and bold, with touches of herbs, fresh citrus and honeyed oak. The whiskey was named the Irish Whiskey of the Year in 2012 by Jim Murray's Whisky Bible.

Size: 750mL

Proof: 92 (46% ABV)

Age: 12 year

Origin: Ireland

Distillery: Middleton Distillery

Crafted at the Midleton Distillery, Powers John Lane Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey is named after the original Powers Distillery, which was situated on John's Lane in Dublin. The whiskey is made exclusively from malted and unmalted barley, which is triple distilled through pot-stills in traditional Irish fashion. Following distillation, a portion of the whiskey is matured in first fill ex-bourbon casks, while the remainder is aged in casks that were previously used to mature Oloroso sherry. After a twelve-year beautyrest, the whiskey is bottled 92 proof.

Powers John Lane 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey Tasting Notes

Nose: The nose is reminiscent of an old Dublin pub with old world aromas of wood and leather lifted by Sherry sweetness

Palate: Rich full bodied single pot still with the honey and vanilla typical of Powers supported by deep rich dried fruit flavours.

Finish: The pot Still pepper fades fast leaving the wood to have the last word.

Distillery Information

Powers whiskey was originally produced in the old John’s Lane Distillery in Dublin before production moved to Midleton along with Jameson in 1975. The John’s Lane Release expression of Powers recreates the magic of the original Powers whiskey style.

Powers’ John’s Lane Distillery was founded by a Dublin inn keeper named James Power in 1791. After his son John Power took over the distillery some years later, the name was changed to John Power and Son. By the mid 1800’s Powers Whiskey was one of the largest and most successful distilleries in Dublin. At that time, Irish distilleries did not sell directly to the public. Instead, they sold casks to whiskey bonders who then sold on the casks to inn keepers who then diluted and bottled the cask strength whiskey in house
